KUCCPS Conducts Media Sensitisation to Promote Ethical and Responsible Reporting

Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) held a two‑day media workshop to sensitise journalists on student placement to universities and colleges.

Organised in conjunction with the Media Council of Kenya and attended by Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and Universities Fund, the workshop brought together 21 journalists representing diverse news platforms from various counties.

The purpose of the workshop, held on August 20th and 21st, was to sensitise the media representatives on processes and key issues in student placement and funding, with a view to promoting accurate, fair, ethical and impactful reporting.

Speaking at the forum, KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Dr. Agnes Mercy Wahome emphasised the importance of responsible, ethical, fair and truthful reporting as Kenya approaches the next general election.

She acknowledged the role of regional media organisations in bridging information gaps at the grassroot level, committing to working with the regional media to promote impactful storytelling. She  pledged to work with the Media Council of Kenya to identify and support journalists to tell stories highlighting positive impact of KUCCPS services and other government initiatives “because behind every programme, statistic and success story is a human story worth telling”.

During the activity, KUCCPS also demystified its placement criteria and processes, including by performing a live demonstration on navigating the student placement system. The journalists were also shown how to access information from KUCCPS platforms to inform their work.

HELB Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Geoffrey Monari, and his counterpart from Universities Fund, Dr. Edwin Wanyonyi, explained the impact of student loans and scholarships, highlighting successes and challenges. Mr. Monari highlighted the importance of loan repayments,  urging past beneficiaries to repay their loans to sustain support for future beneficiaries.

The Media Council of Kenya underscored the importance of responsible journalism, urging journalists to always ask questions that bring out credible and accurate stories.

Journalists engaged in practical exercises, developing and interrogating stories on issues such as loan defaulters and challenges faced by students in marginalised areas. These exercises reinforced the value of factual, balanced, and solution‑driven reporting.
