KUCCPS and KSL launch Partnership to Enhance Access to Paralegal Studies

NAIROBI, 10th February 2025:
Individuals seeking to enrol in Kenya School of Law (KSL) for paralegal studies can now apply through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) online portal.

For the first time, KSL has partnered with KUCCPS to enable students interested in pursuing the Diploma in Law Course under KSL’s Paralegal Training Programme (PTP) to apply.  Form Four leavers with KCSE from the year 2000 to 2024 are eligible to apply during the current application window.

The KUCCPS application portal https://students.kuccps.net/ opened on 24th January 2025 and will close on 14th February 2025. Persons who wish to enrol in the Diploma in Law for May 2025 intake are encouraged to apply before the deadline. KUCCPS and KSL officially launched the partnership today at the KUCCPS offices in Nairobi. KSL becomes the 18th public college not operated by the Ministry of Education to embrace the KUCCPS student placement process.

“This is a testament to the growing confidence that training institutions have in the KUCCPS system, which is transparent and efficient,” said KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Agnes Mercy Wahome.

Other non-Ministry of Education training institutions that have provided their programmes for application on the KUCCPS portal include the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), Morendat Institute of Oil and Gas, Railway Training Institute, KASNEB, Kengen Geothermal Training College, Kenya Forestry College, Kenya Institute of Highways and Building Technology, Kenya Institute of Mass Communication and Kenya Institute of Surveying and Mapping. Others are Kenya School of Agriculture, Kenya School of Revenue Administration, Kenya Water Institute and Kenya Wildlife Training Institute, among others.

Speaking during the launch, KSL Director and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Henry Mutai, noted that the PTP programme helps to bridge the existing gap in middle cadre support for practicing legal professionals in the Bar, the corporate world and government institutions.
“The Diploma in Law programme is meant to meet the current needs for paralegals with broad-based knowledge, skills and abilities. As KSL, we recognize the importance of collaborating with reputable institutions such as KUCCPS to ensure our programs remain accessible to a wider pool of prospective trainees. By partnering with KUCCPS, we believe we can further enhance the reach and impact of our institution, while also contributing to the national goal of providing quality education to all Kenyan Citizens,” he said.

The PTP programme equips learners with practical legal skills necessary for paralegal duties such as investigation officers, court clerks, legal assistants and case-management officers in various offices in the public sector, private sector and the Civil Society. The PTP Program also targets various professionals in other disciplines who wish to have basic legal knowledge for personal and professional development, and this has been made possible by having virtual evening classes that are convenient to working class groups. It therefore recommended for professionals in the legal sector who wish to acquire legal skills and knowledge for career development as paralegals.

The course is designed to provide paralegals with the knowledge required for support of the legal profession as mandated by the Kenya School of Law Act, Cap. 16C. The programme fills the gap for skilled paralegals required by the legal profession. The objectives of the programme are to provide the student with basic knowledge of the law; equip students with basic legal skills to give the requisite support to legal practitioners; train the student on proper ethical responsibilities and requirements of a paralegal; train the student in appropriate communication; and equip the student with problem solving skills.

To be admitted in the programme, one is required to have attained a minimum of C (plain) KCSE mean grade and C+ in English or Kiswahili. The programme takes two academic years with three terms each. Each term consists of 12 weeks. There is a three-month attachment period at the end of the second year.

The total first year tuition fees for the programme is Kshs. 131,000 payable in three termly instalments of Kshs. 47,000 (first term), Kshs. 42,000 (second term) and Kshs. 42,000 (third term).
