Akili Dada, an international non-profit involved in the empowerment of girls and young women social entrepreneurs, held a career symposium on March 10, 2018 at Riara University in Nairobi. The symposium is an annual one-day event that exposes girls to different career tracks and educational opportunities in Kenya and beyond.
The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service partnered with Akili Dada in the career symposium, for the second time, having participated for the first time in 2017.
In the 2018 symposium, Akili Dada hosted 200 high school girls. The programme included career cafes in the afternoon, which involved a break out into small groups based on career interests. During these sessions, invited professionals mentored students on various careers.
The cafes covered careers such Finance, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, Creative Arts, Law and Government, Health Sciences, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Development, Entrepreneurship, Business Management and Administration, and Journalism, among others.
During the sessions, career officers from the Placement Service sensitised the students on different courses offered in Kenyan universities and colleges, application procedures and the placement criteria. The interaction with the KUCCPS officers enabled the students to get critical information on how to improve their career prospects by aligning their strengths and aspirations.
